Hemorrhoids, also known as piles, are swollen veins in the rectal and anal area that can cause discomfort, itching, pain, and even bleeding. While they are common, they can be managed and even prevented with simple lifestyle adjustments. By adopting everyday habits that promote healing and comfort, you can ease symptoms and prevent flare-ups. Here are some effective habits to help soothe and heal hemorrhoids.

1. Prioritize a Fiber-Rich Diet

A diet high in fiber helps keep stools soft and promotes smooth bowel movements, reducing the strain that can worsen hemorrhoids. Fiber-rich foods include:

  • Whole grains (oatmeal, brown rice, whole wheat bread)
  • Fruits (apples, pears, bananas, berries)
  • Vegetables (broccoli, spinach, carrots, Brussels sprouts)
  • Legumes (beans, lentils, chickpeas)

If your diet lacks sufficient fiber, consider taking a fiber supplement like psyllium husk or methylcellulose.

2. Stay Hydrated

Drinking plenty of water prevents constipation and keeps stools soft, making bowel movements easier. Aim for at least 8 glasses (64 ounces) of water daily, and limit excessive caffeine and alcohol, which can dehydrate the body.

3. Engage in Gentle Exercise

Physical activity enhances digestion and circulation, reducing the risk of constipation and hemorrhoid discomfort. Moderate exercises such as walking, swimming, or yoga can improve bowel function. However, avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercises that increase pressure in the anal area.

4. Maintain Healthy Bathroom Habits

Proper toilet habits play a key role in preventing and managing hemorrhoids. Follow these tips:

  • Respond to the urge to go—delaying can lead to harder stools.
  • Avoid straining or sitting on the toilet for too long.
  • Use soft, unscented wipes instead of rough toilet paper.
  • Consider using a squatty potty or footstool to improve posture.

5. Use Warm Sitz Baths for Relief

Soaking the anal area in warm water for 10–15 minutes a few times daily can help reduce pain and itching. Adding Epsom salt to the bath can enhance its soothing effects and promote healing.

6. Wear Comfortable, Breathable Clothing

Tight underwear and synthetic fabrics can trap moisture and irritate hemorrhoids. Opt for cotton underwear and loose-fitting clothing to keep the area dry and comfortable.

7. Apply Cold Compresses

Using an ice pack wrapped in a cloth can reduce swelling and numb the area, providing quick relief. Apply it for 10–15 minutes at a time, several times a day.

8. Avoid Prolonged Sitting or Standing

Sitting for extended periods can increase pressure on the rectal veins. Take frequent breaks to stand and move around, and use a cushion or donut-shaped pillow for added comfort when sitting.
